Episode Five - "Misconceptions of the blues"
The Blues is NOT all sad. The biggest misconception of the blues is that it all sounds the same and that it's all depressing. That's simply not the case. This show begins with a collection of thoughts regarding the misconceptions of the blues. There are some interesting thoughts on this topic and hopefully, it will help to dismiss some of the misconceptions people have about this genre of music. The profile is of a musician named Harry Manx who has incorporated East Indian music to the blues. He is a fabulous performer who takes the blues in a different direction. He's also a great guy (like most of the people I have met during the course of this project.) The music video is a Michael Pickett song entitled "The Hood". Michael Pickett has been playing the blues for over 30 years and he's currently working on a solo career. This video was shot at Escarpment Sound Studio in Acton, Ontario. Michael and his wife, Louise, have also been a great supporter of my project from day one and have taught me a great deal about the blues. The final segment is called "the Beginning" and is a portion of an interview I did with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown about one of the highlights in his career. Mr. Brown is the real deal when it comes to music and he is one of the greats. He doesn't like to be called a blues musician because he believes that the blues has a very negative connotation to it. Mr. Brown only plays "positive" blues. The chance to meet him in Ottawa and spend some time with him was certainly one of the highlights of this project.
